Mad Tea Party: Attraction Spotlight

Fast Facts

Location: Fantasyland, Disneyland

Opening Date: July 17, 1955

Height requirement: None

Who it’s for: Children of all ages!

Ride Length: 1.5 minutes

Fun Fact: This attraction was originally located directly behind the Castle. It was moved to its present location in 1983.

Mad Tea Party is another classic attraction which has been open since Disneyland’s opening day. This ride puts your family in your own teacup which will begin to spin around the ride platform. For those who are even more adventurous, a wheel in the center of your teacup can make you spin even faster!

At night, overhead strands of colorful lanterns light up the night and make for an even more colorful ride at night. Even if you’re not interested in riding, this attraction is worth watching at night. It’s a treat for the eyes!

This is a great ride for the whole family, but it definitely can make even the strongest stomach feel a little bit queasy, so riders beware!

The Official Word

If you’re interested in the official spiel, here’s how Disney’s site describes the attraction:

Take a Twirl in a Teacup

Celebrate your unbirthday with a wild whirl through Wonderland. Madcap music fills the air as you rotate below a canopy of colorful lanterns.

Inspired by the Mad Hatter’s tea party from Walt Disney’s animated classic Alice in Wonderland, this timeless attraction features the same resplendent colors and objects of disproportionate size.

It’s an exuberant swirl-a-bration—and you’re the Guest of honor!

Lizzie’s Take

Randy’s Take

I have plenty of memories of hopping in this ride as a kid with friends and trying to see just how fast we could spin. However, we were all definitely stumbling around for the next few minutes as we regained our balance. These days, even though I have a very strong stomach, Mad Tea Party can make me a little nauseous. That said, this is still a fun ride to get on without adding extra spin from the wheel in the teacup. My personal favorite is to ride at night when the lighting makes it extra magical!
